How would you describe this look?

My client knew what she wanted. I gave her some inspirational advice on the style she wanted. As shes got a rounded face shape, I advised to keep the sides tight and disconnected towards the top. I would still call this an undercut with height throughout the top!

As she had a lot of hair, I texturized and personalized her hair to prevent heaviness and add flexibility. My favorite thing about the haircut is that it’s versatile.

I advised her some products to keep the shape and hold and to come for a regular haircut every 5-6 weeks.

Any advice for someone considering it?

As she’s got thick and straight hair, I advised her to blow-dry her hair with a small round brush or a flat brush with volume mousse from Label.M as a prep into the desired direction she likes to wear the style. Then, finish off with some matte paste from Label.M. I would recommend this haircut to open and strong personalities and also for thick hair for easy maintenance.

It’s not ideal for any face shape. For example, it’s not for a heart-shaped face, as it doesn’t give any volume around the chin area. It’s also not suited to rectangular face shape, as this style will give even more height to the head.

The mullet makes a very distinguished comeback in this very look. Curls and waves make it a flowy style while the blunt edges add the manly straightforward look.

How would you describe this look?

Caroline is a mechanic in training and wanted an easy but cool looking haircut that did not need much maintenance. I cut her hair dry to accommodate for her curls, leaving length at her nape and sideburns to give it a softer look.

Her curls are perfect already, so they just needed more layers and a different design to allow them to move freely. My favorite part of every haircut is the fringe, and this one was no different. I especially love Caroline’s texture because it is finer and has a wider curl pattern. This means it allowed me to sculpt each curl around her face to create a shape that worked with her features and bone structure.

Any advice for someone considering it?

For clients looking for a look similar to Caroline’s, it’s important to know that this is her natural texture. We let her hair air dry after applying Organic Chemistry’s Curl Cream and diffused a little bit at the end.

I always advise my curly-haired clients to wash less and condition more. Curls need moisture to manage frizz. Co-washing, or washing with conditioner, is a great alternative to shampooing every day and is done by scrubbing the scalp as if you were shampooing and then rinsing well.

I also advise against combing or brushing the hair when it is wet if you want to keep volume. Once the product is in the hair, I recommend letting your hair dry as long as possible without touching it. Touching curls can create more frizz and will disturb the curl’s natural wave.

After it dries, I like using Organic Chemistry’s Texture Spray. This spray is a sea salt spray and will add some nice grit to the hair to create more texture. This haircut is great for someone with a wave or curl in their hair and wants to let their natural texture curl on its own.

How would you describe this look?

Jana is a model and friend who I have been working with for a couple of years. She does quite a bit of hair modeling, which includes color. The past few years, every time her hair gets too multi-colored, she comes over for a buzzcut. We know she looks great with it, and it’s easy for her and cool for the summer.

Buzzcuts seem to be at least somewhat popular this year for some reason. This cut is about a #2, maybe a bit shorter on top and lightly faded on the sides and back. I just did another buzz, and the reaction was one of great pleasure. I guess that’s my favorite thing about doing these kinds of cuts. The reactions are always great.

Any advice for someone considering it?

I’d say that although I never expect this look to be mainstream, I do believe it’s something every woman should try at least once. I had one client who took over a year working her way up to doing it, and I have had those who just jump right in. I’d say that even if you feel comfortable with yourself, there is always that little bit of selfconsciousness afterward, but it goes away fairly quickly.

I frankly have never had anyone sorry she went through with it, and it’s amazing how great everyone looks afterward.

There is, of course, no product or styling, and while hair type does have an influence on the actual look, it’s not that important. It’s a minimalist style and super easy to maintain. If someone is considering doing this, I’d say go for it. It’s hair. It grows back.

Perfect Cut for Thin Hair

Short trims on a tapered cut make a perfect canvas for layers. Throw in a ruffled styling, and you still get a versatile cut that goes for both business and play.

How would you describe this look?

This haircut is really fun. The faded sides and back give an androgynous vibe, while the forward bang on top leaves some feminine aspects to the style. I love the amount of texture you can see throughout the top!

My client has very fine straight hair, so texture and volume are very important to her. This cut is edgy, masculine, and feminine – giving a very true androgynous feel.

Any advice for someone considering it?

This haircut is very easy to style, especially for someone with fine hair. I would recommend using a matte pomade to enhance texture and give a little body towards the back. If you have cowlicks and want this style, I would recommend using a sea salt spray all through the top and blow-drying everything forward. Then use a pomade or texture powder at the end.

How would you describe this look?

This look is a disconnected pixie cut with a tight scissor over comb work around the back sides and edges. The top is left disconnected and cut short in the back to long in the front. My favorite parts are the subtle detailing like an asymmetric fringe, loose texturizing in the crown, and the tiny tail in the back add to the playfulness. The soft creative details verge on androgyny but keep it just feminine enough. Cielomar has beautiful brunette natural colors, so we don’t have much to do.

Any advice for someone considering it?

Short hair is for the brave women who are not afraid to show off their beauty to the world. I always spend a lot of time considering which facial features to draw the most attention to based on the client. Short hair is a balance of showing off the best features and bringing out a lot of personalities.

I love Oribe’s Rough Luxury Soft Molding Paste. Styling with a clay or molding paste, I like whipping all the hair up while dispersing the product evenly and then pushing things back down until I get the look right. Every day is different when you let the hair tell you what to do.

How would you describe this look?

This look is a look I created and designed step by step with this client through consultation with many different Instagram and Pinterest pictures and listening and knowing my client’s likes and dislikes.

This look is a pixie-inspired cut. My favorite thing about this cut, after a lengthy consultation, was there were no rules or guidelines. I just cut and have fun with the client, and this particular client with her personality crushed it! The color was great in getting rid of her gray hair, and some highlights brought out her elegance and charm.

Any advice for someone considering it?

The look depends on your face shape, hair texture, and personality. Are you ready for a fun, sexy, edgy, classy, free look? Do you want more freedom to style your hair in a myriad of ways? Are you ready to be committed to a stylist and maintain your look every 4-6 weeks? If so, then have some fun.

How would you describe this look?

There have been a ton of renditions of “lady fades” or short women’s hair with ‘faded’ or ‘tapered’ edges, but this look just takes the edges down to zero, meaning shaved without a guard! The top is cut to have a lot of movement, but everything connects. There is no “disconnection” on top, so it’s not exactly an undercut!

My favorite thing is just the versatility. It’s very bedhead friendly. I also like the longevity of having the sides shaved down, so it’s a look that lasts for a long time.

Any advice for someone considering it?

This look is about a comfortable edge. If you’re considering this look, I would say go for the gusto but be picky about who cuts it for you! This look is not one to gamble with, so seek out someone confident with cutting short hair!

Styling it takes little effort unless you want to clone the tousled “jellyroll” effect, in which case an experienced stylist/cutter should be able to demonstrate how to achieve it and recommend the best products for you!
