Q&A with style creator, Stefano Weidmer
Total Concept Stylist @ Toni&Guy in Dallas, TX

How would you describe this look?

I love this look because it is fun and sassy. You can play with different ways of styling. This client has been growing hair out from a short pixie haircut. It just goes to show, growing your hair out can be a fun experience and an experiment to test out styles that you may not have normally gravitated towards. I love that she came in all frumpy and defeated with a mullet in the back from growing it to leaving super pleased and ready to grow it out longer without giving up.

Any advice for someone considering it?

This style is great for someone growing out their hair because it gives the top layers a chance to catch up to the perimeter length. Plus, it’s a super quick style if your hair is straight. A simple power dry and some wax to give it some direction and texture will do. This length might not be as exciting with wavier hair unless they are already used to styling their hair every day.

How would you describe this look?

This look feels so carefree. The bangs add such a playful element to the bluntness of the bob.

Any advice for someone considering it?

Since the length of the bob is short and it frames the jaw, we didn’t want to make the bangs heavy or covering all of the forehead. The light bang that leaves a triangle on her brow helps keep the face long.

Just be aware that doing a heavy bang with this length of hair can make some faces look very round!

Classic Textured Inverted Bob

@kameestyle

Q&A with style creator, Kamee Kwak
Hair and Fashion Stylist @ Kamee Style in Montgomery, AL

How would you describe this look?

This haircut is called a textured, short inverted bob. It is a classic cut that I made edgy by removing weight and texturizing.

I love this cut because of its versatility. It can be worn in many different ways to show off your personal style.

Any advice for someone considering it?

This cut is great for wavy to straight hair textures. It’s best to use a large round brush to blow out, then use a flat iron to straighten the ends.

If you don’t want to bring attention to your jawline then this cut isn’t for you. Or just ask your stylist to have your inversion fall an inch below your jawline.

Triangular Bob

41 Ultimate Short Hairstyles for Long Faces

@ofhairandhide

Q&A with style creator, Rachel Rosiecki
Stylist @ Black Bird Salon in Richmond, VA

How would you describe this look?

This is a triangular bob (slight angle forward) with minimal layering and tons of texture for a relaxed appearance.

My favorite thing about this style is the effortlessly messy vibe, the minimal maintenance, and effort it requires clients to achieve it, and its ability to translate into something suitable for many lifestyles and ages.

Any advice for someone considering it?

I think a lot of people hesitate to ask for a bob because that can mean a million different things. For a client looking to do something like this, ask your stylist about suitability as far as whether you’re looking for something more even, more angled, or with more weight built up toward the back. These little differences allow a bob to work for all sorts of face shapes and head shapes.

A lot of the layered effect comes with styling and having texture cut into it, not tons of actual layers. If you have fine hair, less layering and texture will lend itself to an overall fuller look. For thicker hair, a soft undercut and multiple methods of texturizing are required to accomplish the piece-y bits on the ends.

99% of the time I refuse to use texturizing shears. Regular shears allow for more customization to the texture and help prevent over texturizing. The beauty of this particular beachy tousled style is that it can be achieved fairly quickly and with a variety of tools. You could curl using a wand, curling iron, or flat iron.

The technique requires practice and you need a good texture spray. I love Unite Texturiza or AG High and Dry. The combination of shaking out the waves and using a product not only makes them look more relaxed but helps it last all day.

Sleek Yet Edgy

@bethieloveshair

Q&A with style creator, Beth Stevcic
Hairstylist @ Fringe Salon in Philadelphia, PA

How would you describe this look?

This style is the perfect, classic bob constructed with clean lines and precise angles. This keeps the look sleek while giving it a bit of edge.

My favorite thing about a bob is that it is timeless and truly a fashion staple. The wearer immediately exudes an air of confidence and femininity.

Any advice for someone considering it?

To style this look, I applied Kevin Murphy’s Body.Builder to damp hair and worked the product from roots through to the ends. This gives a bit of root lift while ensuring that the hair shaft and ends remain smooth. I blow dried using a small to medium round brush starting at the nape area and continued with small sections moving upwards. To finish, I spritzed the hair with a bit of Kevin Murphy’s Bedroom.Hair to add weightless texture and movement.

The bob is an extremely versatile haircut and can be flattering on a multitude of hair types and face shapes. It is especially a game changer for fine hair, easily making it appear twice as full. A bob works beautiful for curly girls, although it is important to consider the amount of spring in curly hair in order to maintain the proper amount of length.

Virtually everyone looks great in a lob. A lob is super forgiving and the added length is a bonus for those who need the ability to put their hair back. The options for this cut are endless as there are tons of minor adjustments that can be made in order for every client to find her perfect bob!

Industrial and Edgy

@ubucolorsalon

Q&A with style creator, Johnny Darling
Beauty & Hair Specialist @ UBU Color Salon in Tampa, FL

How would you describe this look?

I’d describe this look as industrial and edgy. It is inspired by steel and rust.

We had no idea what we’d end up with being realistic with box color removal. We did peach and lavender tones to create this rustic smoky look!

Any advice for someone considering it?

We used a styling cream on damp hair for some hold and body. This style is great for finer hair or medium textures with natural curl. This guest has more of an oval or round-shaped face that rocks the pixie cut with ease.

She has a busy lifestyle so we needed something she could style with ease and minimal product. After blow drying smooth, we used a heat protectant spray and added some curls, piecing them out with a medium hold putty for some great natural texture. Super easy and out the door!

Chic French-inspired Bob

41 Ultimate Short Hairstyles for Long Faces

@made_bymads

Q&A with style creator, Maddie Wallace
Stylist @ Parlor Salon in Richmond, VA

How would you describe this look?

I love this haircut because of its versatility. Depending on the look you’re going for, you can style this chic French-inspired bob to look textured or sleek. It’s a super low maintenance cut that can be flattering for any face shape.

Any advice for someone considering it?

Don’t be afraid to play with products! This cut lends itself to all hair textures, which translates to being able to use all kinds of finishing products.

My client has a LOT of hair, so I used my razor to remove weight and crafted a shattered bob as opposed to a stacked or layered bob. This allows a lot of effortless movement. I wouldn’t recommend this technique for someone with finer or thinner hair as it would take away the necessary density for this cut.

Versatile Bob

41 Ultimate Short Hairstyles for Long Faces

@hernameismel.hair

Q&A with style creator, Mel Amaral
Stylist @ Two 22 Salon in Chico, CA

How would you describe this look?

I would describe this look as a versatile bob and that is what I love about it! It has versatility. The client can wear it sleek and smooth or add texture with a little curl or texture spray. The fringe can be parted to the side as more of a side bang or straight down the middle with more of a 70s effect. That’s already four looks with one cut. Fun right?

Any advice for someone considering it?

If someone was considering this look, I would make sure they are willing to style. Going shorter, most people assume it’s easier, but depending on the person’s hair that isn’t always true.

After sleeping, most people’s hair is all over the place, so using a heat protectant and re-smoothing the hair with a blow dryer is an awesome easy way to style. Like I mentioned before, dry texture spray is awesome to give it some body and movement. Also dry shampoo! I cannot stress enough how amazing dry shampoo is for short hair! Not having to wash your hair every day cuts the time spent on your hair way down, and we all love that.

Versatile Undercut Pixie

41 Ultimate Short Hairstyles for Long Faces @stylist.miranda

Q&A with style creator, Miranda Barton
Stylist @ Antoni Paez in San Jose, CA

How would you describe this look?

This hairstyle is a versatile undercut pixie with a sandy blonde tone. It is easy to style-forward, up, down, slick, roughed up, or curly.

The longer slanted fringe gives a nice contour for a long face and brings the focal point to her eyes. The shape, texture, and color complement her skin tone and personality.

Any advice for someone considering it?

This is a wonderful look for someone who wants to have pixie haircut with a more feminine and softer look. It’s something that can easily be funked up with a little product or styling. This style also works well for someone transitioning to longer hair from a very tight pixie.

This look can work with every hair texture. Products such as a volumizer, texturing spray, dry shampoo, and shine drops are needed to achieve the end result. This style requires a salon visit every five to six weeks.

Badass Blonde

41 Ultimate Short Hairstyles for Long Faces @locksbycassi

Q&A with style creator, Cassi Walstrom
Stylist @ Kiss Kiss Bang Bang Salon in Carmel, IN

How would you describe this look?

I would call this badass blonde simply because that’s exactly the look she is rocking in this picture. I have been doing this girl’s hair for years and we have been all over the spectrum with it.

My favorite thing about this look would definitely be the versatility of the styling for her. Because of the length on top, we can style up and back, straight and bold, or edgy with some curly texture.

Any advice for someone considering it?

I think it is a great style for a product junky or a creative personality. It doesn’t take much time to style in the morning and you can typically get away with going two or more days between shampoos. The only catch with this is that you do have to blow dry and style it to get your best look. But, because it’s short, it only takes up 15 to 20 minutes of your morning on shampoo days!

It’s definitely a fun style for people who like a different look on the daily and aren’t scared of a little product!

Asymmetrical A-Line

41 Ultimate Short Hairstyles for Long Faces @thelunaloft

Q&A with style creator, Kat Grady
Owner / Hair Artist @ The Luna Loft in Pismo Beach, CA

How would you describe this look?

I would describe this look as something that can be very versatile in styling for daytime or night and can be easily maintained. The cut is an a-line bob with an asymmetrical offside. The fuller side can be straight, curly, wavy, flipped out, or pieced into an edgy look.

The look I captured is more of a night/glam look that can be worn with big, beautiful earrings and dressed up. I used a Sutra Beauty infrared flat iron for all of her curls and Kevin Murphy styling products to create fullness and shine.

My favorite thing about the look is that it is timeless. It can be worn on any age group and look classy, fun, and funky, all dependent on how you style it. It is a low maintenance style that looks high-end and can be very sexy because it reveals the neck and plays off of the best features of the face such as the cheekbones.

Any advice for someone considering it?

I do not recommend this look for a full or round face. It is more flattering for long or oblong faces or even a heart-shaped chin. I recommend this to women with fine to medium hair that is not naturally curly. With a cut this curly & short, you don’t want the natural curl to bounce out of control and frizz out into a large poof ball. It is great for naturally wavy hair though and straight styles.

Creating the curl in this look is controlled and smooth so it can be styled into the perfect shape. This cut is great for women who want to wash and go or who like to do something fun with their hair. It is a cut that can be grown out nicely or maintained on a regular schedule to keep the length and edge.

For product suggestions, I recommend a volumizing mousse or spray, a heat protectant if using a blow dryer or a hot tool, and a smoothing or de-frizzing serum to make the hair tamable and shiny. If you want to lock in the curls, a great texturizing hairspray will keep the hair looking great while letting it move and remain soft.

Versatile Pixie Haircut

41 Ultimate Short Hairstyles for Long Faces @elisabeth.joy.hairstylist

Q&A with style creator, Elisabeth Joy
Senior Hairstylist @ Valentino’s Grande Salon in Whitby, ON

How would you describe this look?

This is a pixie haircut. I shaved out the undercut and cut short to long layers throughout, keeping length through the fringe. My favorite part of this cut is the ease and versatility of styling.

Any advice for someone considering it?

This is a great cut for any client willing to highlight their jawline, neck, and cheekbones. It’s very low maintenance because of the shaved section but still feels feminine because of the preserved length in the fringe area.

The fringe could be worn brushed away from the face (pompadour style) or pushed forward, and it works well smoothed out or curled. A pomade is a must for this hairstyle any way you wear it!

Classic & Clean for Over 40

41 Ultimate Short Hairstyles for Long Faces @hairbyhetha

Q&A with style creator, Heather Silva
Hairstylist / Owner @ Tease Hair Boutique in Norwell, MA

How would you describe this look?

I love how classic and clean this look is. This client has a lot of hair, so I spent a lot of time texturizing it while maintaining a blunt cut look.

I love that we gave her a side-swept long bang that softens her face. If you have a long face, this is a good idea to break up the length of your face. Chin-length hair definitely makes your face look rounder as well.

Any advice for someone considering it?

If your hair isn’t naturally straight, investing in a straightening iron would be necessary to recreate this look. I used Kerastase’s Discipline Thermique to protect her hair and help smooth it and Kerastase Oil for more ease of straightening and shine.

To style this, I would use a medium to large brush, getting the hair as straight as it can be. Once dry, flat iron only the last three to four inches to maintain the volume. Once finished drying, I used a tiny bit more of the oil to smooth out and a light hairspray by Shu Uemura called Shear lacquer to control any flyaway hairs.

I would absolutely recommend this cut because it is a timeless cut that can be worn in different ways. Adding some loose beach waves using a flat iron or a medium to large curling iron is a fun way to change this look.

Graduated Texturized A-Line Bob

41 Ultimate Short Hairstyles for Long Faces @saylulasalon

Q&A with style creator, Lisa Telepman
Stylist / Owner & Founder @ Say Lula in San Diego, CA

How would you describe this look?

This look is a graduated texturized a-line bob.

I love doing this look because it is a sassy, professional style that can also be funked up. It is a challenging haircut and also very technical. I love being about to bring out someone’s natural beauty and accentuate their features.

This cut can also be worn a little longer or shorter.

Any advice for someone considering it?

My advice to any client considering this look would be to decide if they want or longer or shorter. They also need to consider their own natural hair texture. This cut can be worn wavy or straight, but they just need to be aware of maintenance if they have curly hair and they want it straighter.

Modern & Edgy

41 Ultimate Short Hairstyles for Long Faces @kellbellm

Q&A with style creator, Kelly Kolinski
Hairstylist @ House of Cabelo in Pleasanton, CA

How would you describe this look?

This haircut is modern and edgy. It is for a woman who finds that her hair is wearing her instead of being able to rock her hairstyle like she owns it.

I chopped this client’s abundant long locks into a manageable, short, and sassy do’ that she can wear for any occasion!

Any advice for someone considering it?

Any client considering this look should take a few things into account. First of all, they definitely have to be ready for a new look. It is not for the weak of heart to make such a dramatic change! Secondly, they have to consult with their stylist about their hair type to be sure the look can be executed to their desires without being difficult to manage at home.

This brings me to my last point. The client must be willing to style their hair every day! Proper products and styling techniques are a must for this contemporary, bold cut.

Tailored Bob

41 Ultimate Short Hairstyles for Long Faces @virdesalon

Q&A with style creator, Amy Virde
Owner / Hairstylist / Color Educator @ Virde Salon in Tacoma, WA

How would you describe this look?

This look is a tailored bob with intentional color placement. I love this look because it is very clean and sleek. Through customized cutting and thoughtful color placement, it effortlessly accentuates her features. By keeping her overall length above her shoulders, we draw attention upward to create the illusion of shortening the length of her face. A side part helps balance her overall look.

This precision bob is tailor cut to suit her texture and density. I added dimension and fullness to her sides by intentionally placing her hair color. The darker colors at the top of her head soften her face, and the subtly lighter colors on her sides increase the width of her face and make her style appear fuller.

Any advice for someone considering it?

If your face is long, you need both a cut and color that will flatter your face shape. Remember there is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to hair. Heads are shaped differently, hair patterns vary, and texture and density play a part. Trust your stylist to help you make the right decisions and customize your look.

Luckily, there are some simple rules that can help guide you. You want to add dimension and fullness to your sides to help shorten the length of your face. The area between your eyebrows and mouth should be the widest part of your cut, and also where the lightest colors should be placed. Keep the overall length of your hair above your shoulders to draw attention upward. A side part or fridge will also help balance your overall look.

Layered & Textured

41 Ultimate Short Hairstyles for Long Faces @hairbymakaylao

Q&A with style creator, Makayla Olmstead
Owner @ Bloom Hair Studio in Vancouver, WA

How would you describe this look?

This look has lots of movement and is very versatile. It can be worn forward or pushed to either side.

This client has lots of hair with some natural wave, so I really layered it out and added lots of texture to minimize bulk. This look can be smoothed out or worn with her natural wave.

My favorite thing about this look is the added structure of the bang juxtaposed with the texture in the layers. Short bobs are trending this season, so I’m excited to create more looks like this!

Any advice for someone considering it?

Some advice I would give to a client considering this look is to make sure you find someone who is confident in cutting short hair to give you this type of style. Also, make sure that your schedule and budget allow you to come into the salon for shaping every six to eight weeks.

Beyond the frequency of cuts, this style is pretty low maintenance in regard to day-to-day styling. You can spend as much or as little time styling this look as you like! It is a good fit for someone who doesn’t have a ton of time to spend styling.

This cut is suitable for straight, wavy, thick or medium densities. I wouldn’t recommend it for someone with thin hair or someone with round or square face shape. Product selection entirely depends on the hair type, but right now my favorite texturizing product is Bedroom.Hair by Kevin Murphy.

Blunt Bob with Precise Bangs

41 Ultimate Short Hairstyles for Long Faces @andydoeshair

Q&A with style creator, Alexandra Somoracki
Hairstylist & Color Specialist @ Kevin Alan Salon in Long Branch, NJ

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This is a blunt, chin-length bob with straight, precise bangs.

My favorite thing about this look is that it’s absolutely timeless and it will always look on-trend thanks to its clean, contemporary lines paired with a classic shape.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

The products I used for this look were focused on smoothing and control. I love Oribe’s Straight Away Smoothing Blowout Cream. Beyond that, a quick mist of Oribe’s Superfine hairspray sets the bangs in place and keeps those pesky flyaways at bay that could ruin the sleek appearance.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

I recommend this look for straight to wavy-haired clients (or curly clients who plan to blow out their hair every day). Because of the sharp lines in this style, rounder faces are especially suited to it because the combination creates balance.

Because of the heavy weight line at the ends, this cut normally needs to be trimmed once every six to eight weeks to keep it looking clean and fresh. Besides that, it’s easy and low maintenance, and it’s my absolute favorite cut to perform.

Edgy Yet Professional

41 Ultimate Short Hairstyles for Long Faces @kels_hairstylist

Q&A with style creator, Kelsey VanderEnde
Hairstylist @ Michauds Salon and Spa in Cloverdale, B.C., Canada

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I would describe this look as edgy yet still professional. Once she decided to grow out her gray, we wanted to do something a little more on the fun side.

I love this look because it allows her to wear her natural curl and still dress it up a bit by adding her own curl to it. It allows her to cut down her styling time, but will still have her hair looking done up.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

Because she has natural texture, we used a smoothing cream. For this look, I used Smooth Down from Redken. Another product you can use to recreate this look is texture creams. These products will allow you to blow dry with a diffuser and then add some curl in the front.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

I recommend this look to someone who would like to have a quick and easy styling time and doesn’t mind visiting the salon a little more often to keep up with the look. This haircut is also for someone who wants to wear their natural texture, yet still, feel done up.

This look is ideal for someone with a round, oval, or a bit longer of face shape as it will highlight the best features of those shapes.

Undone Texture

41 Ultimate Short Hairstyles for Long Faces @lexilooloveshair

Q&A with style creator, Lexi Warren
Hairstylist @ Brush Studio Salon in Camarillo, CA

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This is a great look for someone who wants a little bit of an edgier, undone style and enjoys using texture. I love that this cut is sassy but very stylish.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

We used all Davines products to create this style. We started on damp hair with It’s A Volume Mousse from root to end and followed with a rough blow dry using just the fingers and light round brushing for lots of volumes.

We then curled with a flat iron for bend and finished with It’s A Dry Texture Spray and It’s A Strong Hairspray, piecing out the hair for undone texture.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This style is great for clients with all densities and textures of hair. It would be easy to blowout frizz or style with curly hair, making this look unique to each client. This is also a great style for someone with naturally wavy hair because you wouldn’t need to do much heat styling if cut correctly and you had the right products!

If you have a rounder face that you aren’t fond of accenting, you could do this look a tad longer to draw attention below the jaw as well.

Updated A-Line

41 Ultimate Short Hairstyles for Long Faces @stylesbydeniseealy

Q&A with style creator, Denise Ealy
Stylist / Colorist @ Tops Salon in San Diego, CA

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I would describe this look as an updated version of a classic short A-line bob. I love the angle from the back to the front and the texture on the interior layers. The full bangs give it an updated and youthful look.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

This client has thick, wavy hair. I used Enjoy leave-in conditioning spray and straightener. I finished the look with Alfaparf Cristalli Liquid and Kenra Hairspray 25. I blew it out with a large round brush and smoothed it out a bit with a flat iron to control flyaways.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

I recommend this look for a client who has time in their lifestyle to blow out and flat iron their hair. A client could wear this haircut either smoothed our or worn naturally wavy. It is a great cut for both a business professional and a casual woman.

It would look great on either thick or fine hair and this classic cut suits most hair types. Most face shapes could support this haircut, though the full bangs would look best on longer face shape.

Having hair pushed away from the face really opens it up and prevents it from looking any narrower than it already may be. The way the hair is pushed back from the face in this hairstyle also creates volume on the sides of the face. This makes the face appear wider. Having a fringe covering the forehead makes the face appear shorter and wider. It’s also a great short haircut for women over 60 to hide wrinkles.
