Quick Top Knot

@hairbytara_c

Q&A with style creator, Tara Capone
Professional Hairstylist & Colorist @ Hair By Tara in Webster, TX

How would you describe this look?

The look I created is a sleek but simple half top knot updo. First, I prepped her hair by curling it with one of my favorite products from Aquage, it’s called Beyond Body. It is a thermal protectant but what I love most is it holds the curl all day but leaves the hair super soft still. Then I took a section from the top of ears, diagonally up and back and put it in a ponytail, leaving out a few hairs around her hairline for softness. I then took the ponytail and twisted it to almost the end, sprayed Puff Me texture powder along the twist, and slightly pulled it apart for fullness.

I wrapped it around in a circle shape to create the bun/top knot and pinned it in place with a few bobby pins. You can still pull at the bun more to expand it for even more fullness. I lastly used a wide tooth comb down the curls in the back to make them looser more like a wave pattern. Then, I sprayed Aquage Finishing Spray to hold that shape.

Any advice for someone considering it?

This look to me can be worn very elegantly and also very fun & carefree. A top knot is a statement piece. I believe it gives confidence when you wear your hair styled this way. By pulling hair back and away from your face you can look younger. This style is really perfect from anything to going back to school, to prom, wedding, any special occasion. It also looks great whether your hair is straight, wavy, or very curly.

Dramatic A-Line Bob

@stylinbymak_17

Q&A with style creator, Makayla
Hair Stylist @ Beleza Salon in Tulare, CA

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This is a sassy blonde with a dramatic A-line cut. My favorite thing about this look is the cut. I love the A-line look because I feel like it can suit almost anyone of any age and be stunningly adorable.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

I recommend creating a beach wave with whatever iron works best for you. I personally love to use a straightener because it lasts much longer for me and my clients love it as well. They’ve been surprised at how well their waves stay in place even days later and still looks good.

As soon as the curls cool, I run my fingers through then add some pomade and airspray for the finished look.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

I recommend this look for anyone that loves to a cute and sassy look without taking forever to achieve. It’s a mature and sophisticated look for young women and a classy look for women of an older age.

Effortless Shag

@rainerschneck365

Q&A with style creator, Rainer Schneck
Salon Owner @ Pinsalon in Dallas, TX

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This is an effortless new shag. I love the casual feel about it. It really gives that playful, sexy, rock and roll hair vibe.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

I use our own Pin Salon Rootbooster on about 80% of my clients. It is a light spray-on mousse that will gives a great amount of control. I also always use a heat protector like Kerastase Nectar Thermique. It is my favorite by far! It’s super light and makes the hair shiny but not too soft. I usually finish it out with a little Un.Dressed and Bedroom.Hair by Kevin Murphy.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?
This look is perfect for clients that want an easy, effortless look that is very versatile. It works great with a natural wave and clients who have a good amount of hair because you can eliminate a lot of weight. It also can be used on finer hair because it will give the hair texture and body!

This look works on almost all face shapes because you can adjust the length and framing very easily. It works great on clients who like to use their natural texture, but also like to style their hair for special events. Effortless hair is fun, sexy, and easy to replicate!

Tousled & Touchable

@coledoeshair

Q&A with style creator, Cole
Designer / Product Educator @ Kitsap Gene Juarez in Silverdale, WA

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This look was created mostly for ease and versatility. My clients are the type that want to be able to wear their natural texture or use a hot tool, so with that in mind, we went mid-length with framing at the hollows of the cheek. We kept the layers soft but broken up for lots of movement. I love it because it’s tousled and touchable. We threw in a few soft curl on top just soften around her face.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

We used all Bumble and bumble products for this look. I find that sticking with one product line works really well for the products to play off each other. To start, we used the Hairdressers Invisible Oil shampoo and conditioner just to soften and give lots of shine to the color. For styling, the Curl Primer helped us detangle. To add some texture back in, Surf Infusion provided a nice sea salt feel without feeling dry. After hand drying, I curled using a 1-inch curling iron and raked the curls out with my fingers. To finish, I sprayed City Swept Finish though the ends for separation.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This look is perfect for anyone who loves to change up their style. It’s great if you’re going for a beachy, summery, effervescent look and feel. If you love to touch your hair and flip it side to side, this is the look for you!

Blunt Bob

Q&A with style creator, Laura Myers
Hairstylist and Salon Co-Owner @ HALO Salon in Reno, NV

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This classic, blunt bob is modern and looks great on everyone. It is a strong and striking look that is polished yet effortless. The fringey bang draws focus to her beautiful eyes and the ash blonde color brings out her natural beauty.

My favorite thing about this look is that it complements anyone’s personal style. From polished to hipster, this cut flatters everyone.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

Starting with wet hair, we used Unite Hair Blow & Set cocktailed with Unite U Oil, then blow dried with a large round brush to give it lift and smoothness before passing over with a flat iron. You could also add texture with a wand. Spray with a texturizing spray to finish.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

The great thing about a bob is that it can work for everyone with variations, depending on your face shape and hair texture. For instance, someone with a round face would want a long bob, and someone with curly hair would need layers and more texture to avoid a “triangle head”. It’s a classic cut that never goes out of style.

Iconic Shag

@alexusestellehair

Q&A with style creator, Alexus Estelle
Stylist & Colorist @ Salon Bugatti in Woodlands, TX

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This is a modern shag. My favorite thing about this style is that it’s a modernized version of the iconic 70s haircut. You can also wear this look with bangs. It’s perfect for any client who has tried the lob haircut and wants to try something new.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

This style looks best if the hair is healthy and shiny, so a good leave-in cream is a must. I used Oribe Supershine Light Moisturizing Cream. I like to rough dry the hair or air dry to create a lived-in look. This style can be worn straight or wavy, but be sure to keep the ends straight to achieve the modern shag look. The key is lots of texture, volume and movement.

On dry hair, apply a volumizing powder at the root. I used Oribe Swept Up Volume Powder. To finish the look, I like to add a product to give hold and memory. Spray your favorite texturizing spray! I used Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This cut is perfect for all hair textures and face shapes and can be worn long or short. It’s versatile and can be adjusted to any face shape by personalizing the cut. It’s important to keep the layers on the longer side, but proportional to the length.

If your hair is on the thicker side, add lots of layers remove weight. If your hair is fine to medium, add choppy layers to create movement and texture. Be sure to bring pictures to your stylist!

Feminine Collarbone Cut

@jasminekokoszkahair

Q&A with style creator, Jasmine
Senior Stylist @ Garbo A Salon & Spa in Austin, TX

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

My favorite thing about this textured, collarbone-length cut is the way it releases weight from her quite thick hair. Dense hair can feel more bulky or “bubbly” the shorter it’s cut. I used concave layering and heavy texturizing throughout, and also tucked away a slightly disconnected undercut at her nape by razoring a line about 3/4 of an inch shorter than the perimeter and adding graduation.

This is one of my favorite things to do because it de-bulks and encourages the hair to lay nicely over that shorter section without flipping outwards.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

We used all Aveda products. The Daily Hair Repair offers protection from heat and nourishes the hair prior to styling, while the Confixor (a medium hold gel) offers a shiny, bouncy hold. For this look, I blow dried both into the hair, lifting the roots. Taking fairly large sections, I added flat iron waves and finished with Air Control hairspray for a voluminous result that’s still brushable!

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

As I mentioned, the way this cut was executed works fantastically for very thick hair and also enhanced this guest’s natural waves. Although I styled her with a flat iron for this photo, she rarely does so! She’s an air dry kind of gal and I love a cut that can be super low maintenance or all done up.

Fine-haired folks can absolutely benefit from a cut like this, just a different version! Less layering can keep the ends more full, and just a little bit of texture underneath the surface of the hair perks it up for more volume.

Textured Beach Wave

@kendallxfire

Q&A with style creator, Kendall Marie
Hair Artist (Color Specialist) @ Signature Hair Designers in North Augusta, SC

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This is a textured beach wave look. I love this hairstyle because it’s perfect for a casual day or a night out. And for the ladies going back to school, it’s very quick to style!

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

To style your hair like this, you need a texture spray, a heat protectant, a smoothing cream/oil, a 1-inch curling iron, a flat iron and hairspray.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

Beach waves can be for anyone with any face shape, and any texture of hair. Depending on the length of your hair, you may go up to a 1.5 to 2-inch curling iron for more of an effortless wave. Of course, this is way easier to achieve on naturally wavy hair or hair that simply holds a curl well. The products above with help it hold and last all day!

Textured Lob

@hair_by_levi

Q&A with style creator, Levi Myers
Haircut & Color, Fine and Short Hair Expert @ Atlantic Studio 425 in Downtown Long Beach, CA

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I describe this look as a long textured bob. This client has lots of hair on her head, so in order to create more of a one-length appearance, I used several techniques to reduce weight and volume from the mid-lengths through the ends.

I love how little effort this cut requires to style! While it does look amazing curled or smoothed out, it is also a wash-and-go girl’s dream.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

I like to start with a volume mousse at the roots like Kevin Murphy’s Body Builder or Sebastian’s Whipped Cream. A lightweight cream, paste, or even a soft clay can be nice to separate and define texture at the finish, depending whether a shine or matte finish is desired.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

I find this basic style is super versatile. Virtually anyone can wear a long bob with subtle variations to customize. I always analyze the client’s hair type and face shape, then ask questions about her styling regimen and lifestyle during the consultation. I tweak the cut according to what complements her look and lifestyle.

Part of what is so great about this style is that it gives her a fresh, current, easy-to-style look, while still maintaining the ability to pull it back in a ponytail when she needs to. Easy breezy!

Dimensional Balayage

@theosmomdoeshair

Q&A with style creator, Carrie Miller Murtaugh
Hair Artist / Owner @ Studio 16 in Navarre, OH

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This look is a low maintenance, dimensional balayage. My favorite thing about it is how soft and natural the color looks, and how she won’t have to return for months as we used no color at her base.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

I highly recommend a violet-based shampoo for all of my blonde, balayaged, or highlighted clients to keep the lighter pieces nice and bright. My favorite is Fanola No Yellow Shampoo.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This color looks great on just about anyone, especially those with light to medium brown hair. I highly recommend balayage for those clients who prefer a lower maintenance lifestyle.

Ombre Waves

@hair_by_morgan

Q&A with style creator, Morgan Duncan
Cosmetologist @ Hair By Morgan Duncan in Ventura, CA

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This look is a beach wave, weaved ombré style created with a highlight technique about two inches away from the root. It’s toned into a beautiful caramel blonde.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

To achieve this style, use a 1.5-inch curling iron and finish it off with some of Schwarzkopf’s Dust It to provide the tousled, messy curls.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This hair color is ideal for a client who wants a low maintenance hairstyle that doesn’t need a whole lot of attention throughout the year.

Sunkissed Waves

@studiocgsalon

Q&A with style creator, Carrie Gridley
Owner/Stylist @ Studio CG Salon in Coeur d Alene, ID

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I love that this balayage offers a very sunkissed, lived-in look that is so trendy right now. It also offers the convenience of less maintenance for the client, which is very appealing to many.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

Since this look is typically created with lightener, a thermal protectant is my top recommendation to protect the hair from thermal damage. This look was also created with a Paul Mitchell Worked Up which is a great lightweight working spray ,as well as Paul Mitchell Awapuhi Wild Ginger Texturizing Sea Spray. The curls themselves are flat iron waves.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

Balayage is a great look for anyone just breaking into coloring their hair, as well as anyone on the go with a crazy busy schedule. It’s is also perfect for people with all types of hair. The free-form painting allows for you to get light, moderate or maximum coverage, depending upon your desired outcome. Overall, this coloring technique in general is a great option for so many people!

Balayage Babe

@kels_hairstylist

Q&A with style creator, Kelsey VanderEnde
Hairstylist @ Michauds Salon and Spa in Cloverdale, B.C., Canada

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This is one of my favorite looks. I love this look because it is the perfect blend from natural hair to balayage. Balayage is the best way to add some lightness and depth to your hair without having to color and lighten all of your hair.

What I also love about this look is the length of her hair. It is still long enough for her to pull it back if she needs to and makes it a lot easier to put curls in, making things quick and easy for getting ready in the morning.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

The best way to keep this bright and looking fresh is by using a purple shampoo or conditioner at least once a week. Personally, my favorite purple conditioner is Kevin Murphy’s Blonde Angel. Another great product to achieve this look is a mousse to allow body and movement. Adding a mousse will also allow the curls to hold, and of course I always recommend using a heat protector before you do anything kind of heat styling.

To create these curls I used a flat iron, alternating the curls in different directions to make the hair fuller and create more movement.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

I recommend this look to anyone who has natural hair and just wants to add a little brightness without having to touch up their hair every few months. This look is also great for someone who doesn’t like to have a lot of length and will find it easier to style with shorter hair.

This shorter length of hair is great for someone who has fine hair and wants feel like their hair is fuller. It is also perfect for the person who has way too much hair and needs to lighten up their hair.

Natural Dimension

24 Cute Hairstyles for School That Are Super Easy to Do

@laurentreatshair

Q&A with style creator, Lauren
Stylist / Hair Extraordinaire / Color Specialist @ Studio 2121 in Little Rock, AR

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This look can be summed up as soft, natural-looking dimension. For this client, this was a first lightening session in her journey toward achieving blonde hair. However, this look would be suitable as a final color result as well!

I love how the highlights are placed to light up her face and how softly the lightness is blended in order to resemble natural, sunkissed strands.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

I would suggest asking your colorist for soft babylights and subtle balayage blended from the front of the face toward the back. I would also ask your stylist to alter the technique combo to compliment your facial structure and adjust the color formulation to flatter your skin tone!

While we didn’t highlight a large portion of her hair, I still always recommend using a color-safe shampoo, a nourishing hair mask (once a week), and a daily heat protectant!

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This color placement is flattering on almost anyone. This babylight/balayage combo can be used in almost any base color, from nearly black to blonde! The starting point of the highlights may vary from client to client in order to enhance their unique facial features. For example, some clients look best with highlights that emphasize their brow bone, while others look best with highlights bringing out their cheekbones or jawline.

Warm Balayage

@md.hair.yyc

Q&A with style creator, Mandy DeVo
Hair and Make-up Artist @ Red Bloom Salon in Calgary, Alberta, Canada

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

My favorite thing about this look is how the highlights use warm tones to compliment her skin tone and darker features. I also love that this style was created for a mountain lake wedding.

The great thing about this color for back to school is that it’s great for introducing color. Girls can go back to school with fabulously fresh hair!

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

A 1-inch Hot Tools Marcel curling iron was used to create the curl. I also used Aveda Damage Remedy leave-in and Aveda Volumizing Tonic. Once dried and set, I brushed out the waves with the Wetbrush Pro and finished with Aveda Control Force.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

I recommend this style for someone who loves a pretty busy lifestyle. With this easy, low maintenance color/cut, she visits the salon every 8-12 weeks. She is  able to make this hair wedding ready, workout ready and everything in between.

Texturized Layers

@gracehill.hairdressing

Q&A with style creator, Grace Hill
Senior Stylist and Colourist @ Grace Hill Hairdressing in Sydney, Australia

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This is a lined-in blonde with a texturized, long layered cut. My favorite things about this look are its natural look and effortless style.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

Try Kevin Murphy Undressed for an undone, natural look

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This look is best suited to medium to thick, long straight hair. A round, oval or long shaped face will wear this look well.

Waterfall Curls

24 Cute Hairstyles for School That Are Super Easy to Do

@curllovemiriam

Q&A with style creator, Miriam McNamara
DevaCurl Stylist @ Curl Power Salon in Minneapolis, MN

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

My favorite thing about this look is its flow and balance! I love the waterfall effect her curls have, cascading into one another with no excess bulk weighing them down. At its most basic, this is a long layered haircut, but with hair this thick and curly, it can be difficult to control its natural volume.

After doing traditional long layers, it’s important to go back into the hair and add additional layers around the face and throughout the crown to give the hair a balanced, waterfall effect with no excess bulk. The result is a look that retains length without heaviness and is easy to style.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

This look is designed to maximize the impact of her beautiful natural texture with simple, wash-and-go convenience, which is ideal for early school mornings! I recommend DevaCurl products for maximum moisture, shine and volume control.

I cleansed and conditioned her hair with No Poo and One Condition Decadence, and styled with Styling Cream for moisture and shine and Ultra Defining Gel for touchable yet strong hold that will last all day.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

I recommend this style for any face shape and anyone looking for a simple, easy-to-style look that retains length. You can still pull it up in a ponytail if needed, but it’s easy to make it look amazing when you want to wear those curls out!

Waves and curls in particular will shine with this cut. This look works best for thick, dense hair. I would not recommend this many layers for a client with lower hair density.

Blunt Precision Bob

24 Cute Hairstyles for School That Are Super Easy to Do

@prismahairstudio

Q&A with style creator, Mona Lee
Co-Owner @ Prisma Hair Studio in Albuquerque, NM

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This look is a blunt precision bob with a retro, new millennium vibe. My favorite thing about the look is the versatility. This specific style is actually two haircuts combined into one. When it comes to the entire perimeter, you get a nice and blunt one-length look that is chic and modern. I was then able to bring hair from the top section and bangs and disconnect into that dramatic angle we all want to see.

It gives flexibility to have a sharp angle and long hair around the face while still being able to pull back into a pony.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

The versatility is the best thing about this look. My favorite way to style any of my bobs is to incorporate some type of texture product into the hair. This gives the right amount of texture and volume that is great for same day or second day looks.

For this look, I used Loma’s Nourishing Treatment Oil for a heat protectant and a sleek finish at the ends, then Number 4 Haircare’s Sugar Texturizing Spray for volume and texture at the root.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

I recommend this look to someone who enjoys or is willing to commit to styling their hair, whether that be a smooth iron, curling iron, blow dryer, etc.

This look would be great for someone who is wanting a little volume in the back, but still wants to preserve lots of length around their face. It is great for most thick hair types.

Mermaid Shag

24 Cute Hairstyles for School That Are Super Easy to Do

@callyjosalon

Q&A with style creator, Cally Fredrickson
Hairstylist @ Cloud 9 Salon & Day Spa in West Fargo, ND

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

The cut is considered a mermaid shag. This cut is fun and playful, and since there are no precise lines, the messier the better! It truly is a traditional beach wave at its finest.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

My favorite product that I recommend using on this mermaid shag cut would be a texturizing spray. Unite’s “Liquid Dust” and their “Texturiza” spray are two of my favorites.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

I recommend this cut for a client with thick hair who wants to get rid of some of that extra hair weight. It’s also great on a client who has some wave to their hair as it is meant to be styled as a messy wave. This cut is achieved with plenty of slice cuts, so there are no even layers.

Since it is meant to be a little messy, it would be perfect for a client who doesn’t have a lot of time to style their hair, but still wants to look like they put time into styling.

Classic Graduated Bob

24 Cute Hairstyles for School That Are Super Easy to Do

@wwesleyjohn

Q&A with style creator, Wesley Hanlon
Creative Director @ Sassoon Toronto in Toronto, CA

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

The look is a classic graduated bob with a fringe and a touch of layers. The reason why I chose to do this look was because I wanted to design a cut that would make her eyes stand out even more. That’s what I like most about this cut.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

I recommend a light lotion for heat protection or a leave-in conditioner spray to give shine but keep things light and free to move.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

Anyone can suit this cut, but when choosing a heavy fringe, your face shape should be long enough to suit it because it does close down your face. That being said, if you have a shorter, rounder face, then I suggest the same cut minus the fringe or make the fringe super light and soft (no straight line).

I think the bob is best suited for any lifestyle because it is a wash and wear look that suits any lifestyle.
